Sasha Sinclair
Sketching Tour Director

Sketching in the City is led by award-winning artist and independent art historian, Sasha Sinclair. She is a licensed tour guide in the District of Columbia (DC), a Washington, DC Artist Fellow and a docent at the National Gallery of Art.

Since 1993, Sasha has been living in Washington, DC working in the visual, literary and performing arts. While Sasha continues to have success as a professional artist, she felt locked into a routine of making art in an isolated studio and disconnected from the city she loves. She decided to get out and explore the nation’s capital through an artist’s eyes.  So she set off with her sketchbook and a camera – and just like that was hooked on sketching on location. Now, she’s part of global phenomenon that is called urban sketching.

Sasha loves urban sketching so much that her mission now is to help visitors and locals discover the history, beauty, quirk, and charm of Washington, DC through the art making process. She believes that anyone armed with a few simple techniques can enjoy sketching on location in pencil, pen and ink and watercolor.

This tour is different from the usual group tour experience. You  know the drill – being hustled through a place in a large tour group barely getting to know the place before snapping pictures on a cell phone, and moving on. With Sketching in the City tours, the group is small – max 6 people per tour. This allows Sasha to give you ample attention so you can really SEE and experience the city in a way that stays with you. And in the end you will have sketches and stories to share with family, friends – and, yes, even on social media.

There is no experience necessary to take a sketching tour and all materials are provided. All you need to bring is fun attitude and the desire to experience the city’s architecture, art, parks and neighborhoods in a new way.

Happy Sketching!
